Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park

By Cubie - February 12, 2011

Overnight at Hiroshima Hana Hostel. It was my third night in the Hana Hostel chain but my friend's fourth. Upon checked in, a coupon card was given. On certain nights stay, you might day discount or some goodies. My friends got some Hiroshima postcard for their fourth night stay.

L-R: Locker with decorated anime pictures, cranes and pamphlet on Takayama; board games corner in the common area, another self laid futon bed
After breakfast, bun from bakery next to Kyoto Station and coffee :P

We were back to the Hiroshima Train Station but this round to take the tram to Peace Memorial Park (150 yen). Grin, but this is not the tram we took, but the one after.

Right from across the tram stop - Atomic Bomb Dome or A-Bomb Dome (原爆ドーム)

It was still fairly early, so it was rather quiet. There were a worker sweeping the floor and on/off someone cycle passed.

From A-Bomb Dome, we continued towards direction of Peace Memorial Museum.

Children's Peace Monument - this was built after the demise of Sadako Sasaki who was exposed to the bombing at age 2, contracted leukaemia ten years later. There were many folded paper cranes, contributed by people all over the world. This was in reference with the story if someone folded 1,000 cranes, his/her wish would be granted.

Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims - as we approached this monument, there were a few people paying respect to the victims. It is heart warming to see that.

After that, it brought us to Peace Memorial Museum, entrance 50 yen. The front part of exhibition were of Peace Declaration, historical chronology, etc..

Atomic bombing 8:15am, August 6, 1945

As I thought it was not a big museum, I saw a long corridor leading to another section. This section... display items left by the victims and snippets of story.
:( It was really sad reading them, particularly the one of tricycle and metal helmet.

By the time we retraced our steps back to A-Bomb Dome to catch a tram back, there were more visitors.

Side note: Need to prolong Friday nights...
