1. There are 7 prefectures in Tibet - Lhasa, Shigatse, Qamdo, Nyingchi, Shannan, Nagqu and Ngari. There are counties within the prefectures.
2. Bonism or Bon religion is an ancient indigenous religion and was followed by Bonpo in Tibet before the growth of Buddism. We visited Gurugyam Monastery of Bon Monastery.
3. Buddhism reached Tibet around the 7th century. The 4 main schools of Tibetan Buddhism are Nyingma, Kagyu, Sakya and Gelug. We visited Pelkor Chode Monastery that houses 3 Sakya, Gelug and Kadam. (Kadam sect is said to have disappeared from Tibetan areas after the rise of Gelug sect and that Gelug sect was developed on the basis of the teachings of Kadam sect.)

5. Prayer flags come in 5 colours each representing a different element - blue (sky), white (wind), red (fire), green (water) and yellow (earth).
6. In Tibetan, 'tso' means lake and 'tsangpo' means river.
7. Brahmaputra River or the Tibetan name Yarlung Tsangpo is the mother river of the Tibetan people. The original name is Tachok Khabub meaning horse in Tibetan. It originates from the Jomo Yangzong Glacier in the Zhongba County, flows to India and then Bangladesh where it merges with the Ganges River and finally reaches the Bay of Bengal.
8. Female yak is called 'dri' and yak is generally used to refer to male yak. Yak is recognisable with his long hair, and dri has thinner horn. Wild yak is referred to as 'dong'. 'Dzo' is a hybrid between yak and domestic cattle and is bigger compared to a yak.
9. Dalai Lama is the highest spiritual leader, particularly within Gelug sect (Yellow Hat).
Panchen Lama is considered the second most important spiritual leader in Tibetan Buddhism.
Karmapa Lama heads the second largest lineage in Tibetan Buddhism.
10. The 5th Dalai Lama was the first Dalai Lama to hold both Tibet's political and spiritual leadership roles. He also built the Potala Palace.
