11. Sacred Heart Cathedral
This cathedral is commonly referred as the Sarajevo Cathedral. It is the largest cathedral in Sarajevo. A statue of the late Pontiff John Paul II (Pope from 1978 to 2005) was recently erected and revealed in late April 2014 just outside the Catholic Sacred Heart Cathedral. This statue was a tribute to the memory of the widely respected man. Pope John Paul II went to BiH in April 1997, bringing new hope to a country that was fresh out of the 1992-1995 year.
12. Sarajevo Rose
A beautiful name for such a painful memory. A Sarajevo Rose is a concrete scar made by a mortar shell explosion that was later painted with red resin as a memorial to those who were killed during the Siege of Sarajevo. There is one in front of the Sacred Heart Cathedral.
13. Vječna vatraVjecna Vatra (Eternal flame)
This flame is a memorial to the military and civilian victims of the Second World War in Sarajevo. The memorial was dedicated on 6 April 1946, the first anniversary of the liberation of Sarajevo from the four year long occupation by Nazi Germany and the Independent State of Croatia. However, many years later, at almost the same day (5 April 1992), Sarajevo was under siege.
The memorial is located in the center of Sarajevo at the corner the Marshall Tito street and the main Sarajevo pedestrian street, Ferhadija.
14. Bosnian coffee, best paired with a dessert and I'm partial to baklava.
15. The Academy of Fine Arts Sarajevo
The Academy of Fine Arts Sarajevo
This was originally a Evangelical Church prior to the Austro-Hungarian occupation. It was designed by the most well-known Sarajevo architect, Karl Parzik. At the end of 1970s, the property was signed over to the city authorities. The building was renovated in 1981 and it became the home for the Academy.
16. Memorial to the Murdered Children of Besieged Sarajevo 1992-1995
I actually think the name of this memorial has a very strong word but it is what it is. This monument is dedicated to the children of Sarajevo killed in the 1990's siege. The monument has two parts to it, one part of it is a glass monument surrounded by a water found, while the other part are several small columns with names of the killed children.
17. The National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina
This building was intentionally destroyed during the siege of Sarajevo. The fire ignited by grenades completed destroyed the historical library building and most of its collections of about 2 million volumes. Of course, the one I saw was the restored building.
